Ae-Sun’s mother wishes Ae-Sun not to live like a babysitter in the beginning. Ae-Sun remembers her mother’s words. She wishes her daughter to live freely in When Life Gives You Tangerines Episode 9. She tries her best to hold up Geum-Myeong’s dream.
Episodes 9-10
Ae-Sun sells her house and she moves into a small apartment. Gwan-Sik blames himself for letting his wife live in the dilapidated house. He’s very sad and he puts up the floral wallpaper for the bed room. He’s warm to ask his wife if she wants to change the new curtains.
Ae-Sun knows his thoughts. She smiles to tell her husband that she doesn’t care where she lives. She thinks it’s her home as long as he’s there. They decorate for the new home. Ae-Sun is poor because she gave all the money to her daughter. She planned to open a fish store with the three sea women for not setting up a stall. She has to set up a stall in front of the fish store. The store is open. The people take a group photo and they send it to Geum-Myeong. Geum-Myeong sees her mother stall next to the store. She cries and she swears not to take away her parents’ dream.
One year later, Geum-Myeong returns to Korea. She rents a dilapidated room for saving. The landlord Yeong-Sam is bad. He refuses to install lock for Geum-Myeong. She has to block the door with the closet. The man Chung-Seob asks Geum-Myeong to help him. He’s the boyfriend of Yeong-Sam’s daughter Bu-Seon. He and Bu-Seon was dating at home.
Yeong-Sam walks into the room. Geum-Myeong has put Chung-Seob into her closet. Bu-Seon tries to drive her father away. But Yeong-Sam pays attention to the closet because Bu-Seon tried her best to cover the closet. He catches Chung-Seob.
Meanwhile, Ae-Sun is angry like the landlord. She hears a sound from her son’s room. She makes an excuse that she needs to give juice. She walks into the room and she looks into it. She hears the sound from the closet. She asks Gwan-Sik to open the closet.
She sees the girl Eun-Myeong is dating. Eun-Myeong has to admit that he’s dating Hyeon-Suk. Ae-Sun doesn’t blame the two. She asks Hyeon-Suk about her family. She’s told that the girl is Sang-Gil’s daughter. She’s surprised. She takes her son to visit Hyeon-Suk’s family in the evening. Sang-Gil is angry to hide in the hallway to smoke.
Geum-Myeong continues to study in Seoul. She goes to the notice board to look for a part-time job for living expenses. She runs into Chung-Seob who’s posting movie posters. He learns that she’s looking for a job. He gives her a job.
Geum-Myeong comes to the cinema to work. The boss’s wife complains it to Geum-Myeong that Chung-Seob is an artist. He painted the sign at the cinema. He painted a love movie into a landscape painting. He didn’t talk back when the boss scolded him. But he was too stubborn and he refused to change his painting style.
Geum-Myeong is interested in Chung-Seob. She wants to know more details. But a customer wants to buy tickets for watching movie with her. She tries to reject it but she sees the ring he threw to her. She’s excited to let the boss’s wife sell tickets for her. She goes to see her boyfriend Yeong-Beom.
Chung-Seob sees Geum-Myeong and Yeong-Beom having a hug. He doesn’t know why he’s jealous. He plans a news and it interrupts the couple. Yeong-Beom takes Geum-Myeong home. He finds out that his girlfriend is living in the dangerous neighborhood. He worries about it.
Chung-Seob passes by. Yeong-Beom protects Geum-Myeong. She comforts him that the guy is her colleague. She thinks she lives well there. But he insists on asking her to live in the apartment in the affluent neighborhood. She thinks her pride is trampled. She’s furious to leave. Chung-Seob overhears the talk. He smiles after knowing Geum-Myeong had a fight with her boyfriend.
Geum-Myeong works at the cinema for a long time. The boss asks her to take the dumplings to Chung-Seob who works in the basement. She goes to the basement and she sees the paintings there. She thinks it’s very good. She hears the argument.
Bu-Seon has a fight with Chung-Seob. She mocks him that he couldn’t take her to Western-style restaurant to have meal. He blames her for going on blind dates six times after she got together with him. He thinks she doesn’t love him.
The phone is ringing. Bu-Seon comes to pick up the phone. She sees Geum-Myeong who’s hiding in the room. She doesn’t believe her words no matter how she explains it. She’s told that her job was recommended by Chung-Seob. She suspects that the two had an affair. Bu-Seon scolds Geum-Myeong. But Chung-Seob stops her. He asks her to respect Geum-Myeong.
Geum-Myeong brings the seaweeds to Yeong-Beom’s apartment. Because it’s her boyfriend’s birthday. But she runs into her boyfriend’s mother Bu-Young. Bu-Young notes that Geum-Myeong doesn’t know how to spoon the soup and she uses her hand to touch the seaweeds. She doesn’t like her.
Geum-Myeong intends to eat a lot for flattering her boyfriend’s mother. She praises her for her cooking skills. But Bu-Young talks back that the food was bought by her. She complains it to her that she’s a big eater. She reminds Geum-Myeong that the apartment was bought by her. She doesn’t wish her to come to the place.
Geum-Myeong cries in the heavy rain after the dinner. She thinks she’s like a cheap clown in front of her boyfriend’s mother. She thinks she flattered a person who won’t like her. She asks her boyfriend to make a choice between her and his mother. She leaves.
Geum-Myeong separates from her boyfriend. She focuses on her work. She notes that there’s an aunt Bun-Hui coming to the cinema when the new movie is released. Bun-Hui tells the people that the movie poster is a work of art. Geum-Myeong figures out Bun-Hui’s identity. She gives her a movie ticket. She tells a lie to her that it’s the employee benefits.
Chung-Seob’s mother thanks Geum-Myeong. She tells the girl that her son is good at painting. The kind boss gives some tickets to Bun-Hui. He thinks his cinema will be over without Chung-Seob. Bun-Hui is happy to smile. She walks into the movie theater. It’s her fist time to watch movie. Her mood is changed when it follows the plot.
Chung-Seob looks at his mother who’s watching the movie in the theater. He thanks Geum-Myeong for what she did. She asks him to paint a painting and give it to her. She noticed that his painting is very good. She thinks she can earn a lot through selling his painting once he’s famous. The two makes jokes. The movie is over.
Chung-Seob and Geum-Myeong take Bun-Hui to the store. Bun-Hui talks about the plot with her son. She thanks the warm Geum-Myeong. She thinks daughter is better than son. She gives the English books to Geum-Myeong. She asks her son to take the girl home.
Chung-Seob buys Geum-Myeong noodles for thanking her. She catches the chance to ask him to explain their relationship to the landlord’s daughter. But he thinks he doesn’t have to do so. He knows his girlfriend wanted to reduce the guilty that she married someone for money. Geum-Myeong comforts Chung-Seob who was dumped.
Ae-Sun comes to her uncle’s house for preparing the offering. It’s the anniversary of his father’s death tomorrow. The family is missing the dead person. They mention Ae-Sun almost had an accident when they sacrificed to their ancestors.
We go to thirty years ago. Ae-Sun takes her cousin to go to chop wood. She discovers a black dragonfly. She remembers the black dragonfly is a Grim Reaper so that she wants to catch him. She doesn’t wish the black dragonfly to take away other dragonflies who are going to die. She chases the black dragonfly to the bus stop.
A woman asks Ae-Sun to go to change the change for her so that she can take bus. Ae-Sun does it for the woman. The woman gives Ae-Sun a coin as payment. She asks her to go to the alley to see the seller. Ae-Sun tries to run to the man. But she’s stopped by her mother. The kidnapper flees. Gwang-Rye saves Ae-Sun. She was told that her daughter went to chase the dragonfly. She had bad feelings and she found her daughter.
She’s told that there’s a scar on the woman’s wrist. She knows the woman won’t forgive her daughter. She checks the female customer’s wrist when she comes to buy seafood. It scares many customers away. She catches the woman who tried to kidnap her daughter. The villagers are told that the woman Hyeon-Ja and the man Gong-Beom are kidnappers. They’re angry to beat the two.
We return to the present. Ae-Sun has same nightmare. She worries that her daughter will have an accident after she woke up. She calls Geum-Myeong and she persuades her to come home early. She doesn’t allow her to sleep over outside.
Geum-Myeong tells her mother not to worry about it. She persuades her to focus on herself. Ae-Sun is angry to hang up. She complains it to her husband that her daughter is still a little girl in her mind even if she grows up. She falls asleep and she has same dream. She goes to look for Geum-Myeong. It causes the death of her little son.

Ae-Sun wakes up from the dream. She’s anxious. She goes to see Geum-Myeong. She finds out that her daughter passes out because of gas poisoning. She hugs her daughter and she cries. She worries that her daughter will pass away like Dong-Myeong.

She rushes to the living room and she calls the hospital. Chung-Seob is at the landlord’s house. He carries Geum-Myeong out of the house. Ae-Sun has worried about Geum-Myeong so that she saved her again and again. Geum-Myeong misses Ae-Sun’s worry after Ae-Sun cannot make a call.
