Eun-Myeong gets married with Hyeon-Suk. They have a baby in When Life Gives You Tangerines Episode 13. Ae-Sun’s son has gotten married. But he doesn’t have a good job. He lives with his parents in the small house. Gwan-Sik makes a plan for his son’s future.
Episodes 13-14
Eun-Myeong doesn’t want to do the meager job. He thinks about running a business and getting rich. He doesn’t want to be like his father who didn’t dare to order more food when they went to the restaurant. The father and the son have a fight.
Hyeon-Suk is a new mother. She’s tired after she hugged the baby for a while. Ae-Sun has to hug the baby downstairs. She notes that Hyeon-Suk’s mother Young-Ran is peeking at the baby in the car. She takes the baby to see her in-law.
Young-Ran never looked down on her son-in-law. She feels relieved that her daughter married Ae-Sun’s son. Everyone says that son is like his father. Gwan-Sik is known to care for his wife. She believes that Hyeon-Suk will get her husband’s care as well. Ae-Sun has a daughter as well. She promises Young-Ran that she won’t scold Hyeon-Suk who cannot do anything. She won’t let her be wronged in her mother-in-law’s family.
It’s Geum-Myeong’s turn since her younger brother got married. South Korea suffers financial crisis in 1997. Many companies go bankrupt and the unemployment rate rises gradually. Geum-Myeong is fired as well. The cinema she worked suffers the crisis. She sits on the bus and she notes that the cinema will close in December.
She comes to the cinema and she watches the last movie. Chung-Seob comes to the cinema as well. He walks into the movie theater after the movie begins. He sits not far from Geum-Myeong. They don’t notice each other because they’re separated by some people.
The movie is over. The boss asks Chung-Seob if he saw Geum-Myeong. He arranged the two to sit together after knowing the girl came to watch movie. Chung-Seob realizes what he missed. He chases Geum-Myeong out of the cinema. He sees her getting on a bus.
He takes a shortcut and he catches the bus. There’re many passengers on the bus. Chung-Seob keeps observing Geum-Myeong who falls asleep. He approaches her. The passengers get off the bus one by one. Chung-Seob sits on the seat in front of Geum-Myeong. He waits for her until she wakes up.
Geum-Myeong and Chung-Seob haven’t see each other many years. They go to a restaurant. Chung-Seob confesses that he went to the cinema everyday and he wished to see her. He missed her very much after they separated. She’s drunk after she drank a few bottles of wine.
She makes the bottle fall to the floor by mistake. Chung-Seob picks up the glass shards. He worries that Geum-Myeong will be hurt. He checks her hand then. She looks at the big boy who cares for her like her father. She agrees to date him.
They have been in love for a while. It’s time to talk about the marriage. Geum-Myeong takes her boyfriend to see her father. Gwan-Sik takes his future son-in-law to go fishing. He doesn’t expect that Chung-Seob is very seasick. The guy falls on the boat and he vomits. He cannot stand up.
Gwan-Sik doesn’t like Chung-Seob who’s weak like a chicken. Drinking is test as well. Gwan-Sik sees that Chung-Seob isn’t a good talker and he cannot drink. Chung-Seob is drunk and he staggers. But his eyes follow Geum-Myeong. He learns that his girlfriend is going to go to restroom. He worries that she will catch a cold and get hurt outside.
Gwan-Sik paid attention to it that Chung-Seob would follow Geum-Myeong’s steps. He wanted to protect her and he made sure if she’s in his visual field. Chung-Seob does the same thing now. He puts on the coat for Geum-Myeong and he pulls her aside so that she can avoid the bottles on the floor.
She catches the chance to teach him to be open so that her father will like him. She won’t marry him if her father doesn’t agree to it. Chung-Seob returns to the restaurant. He smiles at Gwan-Sik and he insists on peeling the shrimp for him.
Ae-Sun knows Chung-Seob loves her daughter very much. She and her husband agree to marry their daughter to the guy. But the point is that Chung-Seob’s mother Bun-Hui prepared a present for them. She wrote on the greeting card that she likes Geum-Myeong very much. The words make her happy all night. Her daughter is pretty and she has a good personality. How could any of the elders not like her?
Geum-Myeong has a wedding after the parents of both sides agreed to it. She takes Gwan-Sik’s hand and they walk into the hall. He’s told her not to hold up no matter what happens. Because his father will help her. The scene becomes the catalyst of the tears.
His father fed her when she was a kid. He told her that she can spit it out if it’s not delicious. He told her to come home if she doesn’t like the school when she’s at the age to go to school. He did the same thing before she ran. He told her not to hold up if she cannot run. He asked her to come to his arms. She’s grown up when she listened to the words. She felt safe.
She knows her father will be a powerful supporter of her. She cries when she thinks about it. The wedding ends in the tears. But her younger brother suffers the imprisonment when she welcomes her happiness. Eun-Myeong wanted to earn money. He was tricked by his friend and he became the guy’s scapegoat.
Eun-Myeong complains when his parents scold him. He thinks his parents have cared for Geum-Myeong more than him. They gave good food and good fun to her. They told Geum-Myeong that their daughter is the best. Their son never got the treatment.
Eun-Myeong wasn’t happy. He wanted to do something big for proving that he’s better than Geum-Myeong. But he got fooled by someone else. It’s the problem that Ae-Sun worried about. She’s a perfect mother. She will be negligent sometimes. She worried that she will hurt her son. But she has a method to save her son. Her son will be released as long as she repays the money to the victims.
Hyeon-Suk returns home. She begs her father Sang-Gil. He’s heartless and he cares for his money more than his daughter. He doesn’t want to help Eun-Myeong. Ae-Sun visits the mother of Eun-Myeong’s friend. She wants to know the whereabouts of her son.
The madam Won-Bok intends to conceal it. Ae-Sun is furious to pull her hair. She rids on her and she gives her a lesson. The sea women who accompanied her to the place. They never saw her fighting strength burst. Ae-Sun takes away the TV and the ring from Won-Bok’s store. She treats it as a compensation to her family.
Gwan-Sik goes to borrow money. He’s middle-aged and he humbles himself for his son. He sells the first boat he owns. The boat carries the memories of the whole family. But he thinks it’s worth it for saving his son. His son is released after they gathered the money.
Eun-Myeong should be happy after he’s free again. But the guilt in his heart is magnified. Maybe parents and children are so. Children can hurt parents easily and they give up them. But parents will hold children’ hands tightly no matter what happens.
Ae-Sun persuades her son that Gwan-Sik worked hard and he was hurt a lot. She thinks he should say something to hurt his father when he didn’t share the worries for him. Gwan-Sik cannot continue to earn money without the boat. Ae-Sun dreamed of writing poems ever. She runs a business that helping the customers take care of squid in the market. She has worked one day and her face is red from the cold.
Eun-Myeong wants to do something for the family except Ae-Sun. He makes all kinds of excuses to go out when it’s dark. Hyeon-Suk has told Gwan-Sik about what Eun-Myeong is doing. Eun-Myeong couldn’t find a job because he was in prison. He could only sell rice cakes outside.
Hyeon-Suk feels sorry for her husband. She begs Gwan-Sik to raise them. He’s not soft and he thinks Eun-Myeong should go through trials as a master of the family. He feels sorry for his son even if he said so. Eun-Myeong leaves a lot of money and he leaves quietly.
The family worries that Eun-Myeong will go to kill himself. Hyeon-Suk calls her father. She begs him to help her look for her husband. She cannot live otherwise. Ae-Sun receives a message. It seems that her son got on a distant-water fishing vessel.
The family rushes to the pier. Ae-Sun worries that she will lose her son again. Gwan-Sik goes to the pier. But the ship has left. He asks the captain to return. He promises to pay the fuel costs. Sang-Gil grabs the phone from Gwan-Sik. He promises to pay double.
The captain returns for the money. Gwan-Sik scolds his son that there was nobody doing the dangerous job. He thinks there will be an accident. He can step in the danger for his family. But he doesn’t allow his son to take his step. The son cries to tell his father that the customers asked him to be nice to him when he sold rice cakes in the evening. He discovered that Gwan-Sik and his father-in-law had helped him.

The truth is so. Gwan-Sik took the grandson to see Sang-Gil. Sang-Gil’s heart melted after he saw the cute child. Gwan-Sik persuaded him not to bully his wife at home. He thought his wife will leave him in the end. Sang-Gil wanted to get along with his daughter. So he accepted Gwan-Sik’s proposal. He gave money to the people and he asked them to order rice cakes from Eun-Myeong.

Ae-Sun is late. She almost lost her son. She cries and she apologizes to her son. She thinks her favoritism made him feel unbalanced. The son is taken home. Gwan-Sik gets a job for him.
